Rca T814 Huge Wood Tombstone Radio 1936 Works GreatUp for bids is a nice clean working rca t8-14 tube table radio. The t8-14 is a huge wood tombstone style radio, its picutred on page 245 of stein's machine age 2 book. Teh set offered is in excellent consition. The finish is the original, i cleaned, lightly sanded and re-oiled the wood with a tung oil wipe-on. The cabinet looks fantastic. There were a few scratches in the original finish, but no wood damage. The scratch on the top is visable in the photo, but it looks worse in that photo than up close.
Overall, all the scratches are well-blended by my restoration. The finish was not stripped or sanded down. The wood is all solid. I replaced a tiny piece (about 1/4 inch) of veneer at the bottom edge trim.
It looks good and can be seen only if you look very close. There is no lifted veneer. All the veneer is firmly held in place.
The radio plays vrey well on all bands. tI picks up the am broadcast band and two short wave bands.I disassembled the radio, cleaned it well, repaired and re-capped the chassis, replaced any bad tubes and properly re-assembled it. The knobs, dial, dial lens and pointer are all nice clean originals. I thoroughly cleaned all the parts prior to re-assembly. The grill cloth is also the original. It is niec and clean. I removed it, dusted it off and properly re-installed it.The radio looks great and it is extra clean. I replaced all three filter capacitors, as well as all the fractional value oil-in-paper capacitros with nice fresh yellow types (see the photo). I blew all the dust and dirt out of the radio. It was pretty clean to begin with. The line cord is a new cloth-covered type replacement. The set plays well night and day on all bands. A previous owner installed a wire around the perimeter at the radio back edge as an antenna. I have it hooked up now and it works great with that antenna. An external antenna can also be easily attached to pick up even more stations. The volume is loud adn clear. Teh controls all work well with no scratch or niose. The dial mechanism lights up and works smoothly and properly. The original paper tag is still attached to the inside of the cabinet. It too is nice and in good condition. The radio measures 20 x 16 x 11 inches in size.
Overall, the t8-14 is a fine working radio in excellent condition. It will make a great addition to any radio collection. Bid on it for your own collection. Bid on it as is deu to age.
